Boudin's Skies

June 16, 2026

Eugène Boudin painted the beaches of Normandy as mostly sky. Corot called him the king of skies; Monet called him his teacher.

Eugène Boudin worked outdoors at a time when that was still unusual, and he gave most of every canvas to the sky. The beach is a thin strip at the bottom, the people are a few strokes of colour, and above them the weather moves.

He met a teenage Claude Monet in Le Havre and talked him into painting outside. Monet said later that he owed it all to Boudin. You can follow the line from Boudin's beaches to Monet's Seine, which is in the shop.

A print of Boudin's Approaching Storm is on the way. Write to us if you would like to hear when it is ready.
