About
Stilwater is a small print studio on the Kloosterstraat in Antwerp, run by Ines Wouters. We print one subject only: water at rest. Calm seas, river mouths and harbours at first light, painted between the 1600s and the early 1900s.
Every painting we print is in the public domain, and every scan comes from the museum that holds the original. So there is no guessing at colours from a postcard: we start from a file made in front of the painting, then proof by hand until the paper matches it.
The paper
We print with pigment inks on a 310 g cotton rag with a soft, matt surface that suits oil paint. Prints are made to order and sent within a week.
The studio
Visits are by appointment. There is always a drawer of proofs to go through, and coffee.
